N. Sunil Anand

The headline that defines N. Sunil Anand isn't his vote share — it's a sentence Karnataka's newsrooms repeated on result night: he is the only Kannadiga elected to the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. His mother tongue is Kannada. His family's ancestral village is Hoodikeghatta in Dabbeghatta hobli, Turuvekere taluk, Tumakuru district. And yet his political home is Mettuppalayam, at the foot of the Nilgiris — where his great-grandfather Boregowda walked nearly a century ago, fleeing a famine in Tumakuru.

Three generations of the family put down roots in the Bhavani belt. His grandfather Lingaiah (also called Lingegowda) served as Chairman of the Mettuppalayam Municipality — the family's first formal entry into local civic life. His father is H. N. Nagaraju. The lineage belongs to the Ningegowdas branch of the Vokkaliga community. By the time Sunil Anand came of age, the family ran coconut plantations in and around Mettuppalayam taluk, hotels, and a real-estate practice — Kannada press describes him as a "zamindar-style businessman" whose standing came from the land first and politics second.

His political career, however, isn't new. For roughly thirty years he worked the Mettuppalayam ground — about a decade of it inside the AIADMK, where he was an organiser and financier but never a candidate. A lifelong fan of actor Vijay's films, he switched to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam approximately a year before the 2026 poll. Before signing up, he travelled to Hoodikeghatta for a family prayer — a detail Kannada outlets like TV9 picked up. TVK assigned him the standard "Party Administrator" (கழக நிர்வாகி) title — the same generic seat-level designation given to all 234 TVK pointmen across Tamil Nadu.

His own explanation for the win, delivered to Deccan Chronicle after the result, leaned on the leader rather than the candidate: voters, he said, were not weighing language or origin — they were trusting Vijay. He is reported as having studied up to the 10th standard; the formal ECI affidavit remains the appropriate source of record for educational and asset declarations.

Geography. Mettuppalayam town sits at the foot of the Nilgiris on the bank of the Bhavani river, roughly 35 km north of Coimbatore city at ~314 m elevation. It is the gateway to Ooty and the starting point of the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway — India's only rack railway. State Highway 15 and NH-181 cross the constituency.

Administrative shape. AC 111 is the second-largest town in Coimbatore district by population and the headquarters of Mettuppalayam taluk. The assembly seat extends beyond the municipality to cover surrounding rural and semi-urban areas, including blocks adjoining Karamadai (west) and reaching toward Annur (east).

Demographics (2011 town figures). Population (Mettuppalayam municipality): 69,213. Sex ratio: 1,022 females per 1,000 males — well above the national average. Religion: Hindu 69.24%, Muslim 25.65%, Christian 4.84%. Constituency electorate (2026): ~2.82 lakh.

Economy & key local issues. Agriculture (coconut, areca nut, banana, vegetables) anchors the Bhavani belt. Tourism — the NMR train and Nilgiri foothills — supports a service economy. Wholesale agri-markets, marble and granite trade, and small textile units round out the local economy. Recurring civic issues include drinking-water supply in upland villages, Bhavani river silting and post-monsoon flood risk, road connectivity to tribal hamlets, man-animal conflict along the Karamadai–Mettuppalayam elephant corridor, the long-standing demand for improved NMR services, coconut price support, and farm-labour wages.
