V. Sampathkumar — affectionately known across Coimbatore as "Kovai Sampath" — is the MLA for Coimbatore North (AC 118) and Minister for Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes & Denotified Communities Welfare in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Born in 1978-79 to M. Velayutham, he lives at 14/51, Rajiv Gandhi Road, Ganapathy, in the heart of Coimbatore's northern industrial corridor — the very neighbourhood he now represents in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Sampathkumar completed his higher secondary education in 1995-96 and earned an MBA from Annamalai University's Directorate of Distance Education between 2001 and 2006. In 2017 he founded Sri Kamadhenu Dairy (GSTIN 33ATZPS4359Q1ZD), a ghee and dairy trading proprietorship he still runs — the source of the Vikatan headline that crystallised his story: "Ghee trader; 20-year fan-club executive; now a minister." His 2026 election affidavit declares total assets of approximately ₹3.44 crore (jewellery, vehicles, commercial and residential property) and an ITR trajectory that has risen 2.9× in five years — from ₹3.96 lakh in 2021-22 to ₹11.51 lakh in 2025-26.

His political identity, however, is older than TVK itself. From around 2005 he has been a senior office-bearer of the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (Vijay People's Movement) — the fan-club umbrella that actor Vijay maintained for two decades before converting it into a political party. When Vijay launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam at Panaiyur, Chennai, on 2 February 2024, Sampathkumar was among the first Coimbatore loyalists to take office in the new outfit. Within months he was appointed TVK Coimbatore City District Secretary (கோவை மாநகர மாவட்டச் செயலாளர்), the highest party post in the district.

He earned that elevation through ground organisation. He served as the operational lead for TVK's first-ever Western Region (Kongu) Booth Agents Conference, held in Coimbatore on 26-27 April 2025, and hosted the 26 April functionaries' meeting at which Vijay publicly pledged a "corruption-free, transparent government." By the time nominations opened, the TVK central committee allocated him Coimbatore North — a seat held by AIADMK for fifteen unbroken years. He filed his papers on 9 March 2026 and ran a famously door-to-door campaign captured in the YouTube reel "கோவை வடக்கு தவெக வேட்பாளர் சம்பத்குமார் வாக்கு சேகரிப்பு; உற்சாகமாய் வரவேற்ற பெண்கள்".

On 10 May 2026 Sampathkumar polled 92,500 votes (40.91%), defeating DMK city-secretary Durai Senthamilselvan by 21,992 votes and pushing BJP Mahila Morcha national president Vanathi Srinivasan into third place by an even wider 42,778-vote gap. He became the first non-AIADMK MLA Coimbatore North has elected since the constituency was created in the 2008 delimitation. Eleven days later, on 21 May 2026 at 10:00 IST, he took oath at Lok Bhavan, Chennai — the new ceremonial name for the Raj Bhavan complex — from Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, in a ceremony that opened with Vande Mataram, the National Anthem and Tamil Thai Vazhthu. The same day he was assigned the Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes & Denotified Communities Welfare portfolio.

Just 48 hours after the oath, on 23 May 2026, his first ministerial appearance on record was not a portfolio launch but a crisis visit. A ten-year-old girl had been abducted and murdered in Sulur the previous day; her body was held at the ESI Hospital, Varadharajapuram (Singanallur). Sampathkumar arrived with District Collector Bhavankumar and Sulur MLA N.M. Sukumar, met the family, and pledged the maximum legal punishment for the two arrested accused, Karthik (33) and Mohan Raj. His quote — "The accused will receive the highest capital punishment" — was carried verbatim by India TV News, ANI and Daily Prabhat, and in Tamil by Daily Thanthi, Maalai Malar, Nakkheeran and The Covai Mail. It set the moral register for his ministerial debut.

இந்த உயர்வை அவர் தரை அளவில் சம்பாதித்தார். 26-27 ஏப்ரல் 2025-ல் கோவையில் நடைபெற்ற தவெக-வின் முதல் மேற்கு மண்டல (கொங்கு) வாக்கு வங்கி முகவர்கள் மாநாட்டை முழுமையாக ஒருங்கிணைத்தார். 26 ஏப்ரல் கூட்டத்தில் விஜய், "ஊழலற்ற, வெளிப்படையான ஆட்சி" தருவதாக உறுதியளித்தார். வேட்புமனு தாக்கல் தொடங்கியதும், மத்தியக் குழு அவருக்கு கோவை வடக்கைத் தேர்வு செய்தது — 15 ஆண்டுகள் அதிமுக கைப்பற்றியிருந்த தொகுதி. 9 மார்ச் 2026 அன்று வேட்புமனு தாக்கல் செய்து, வீடு வீடாக சென்று பிரசாரம் செய்தார்.

Created in the 2008 delimitation, Coimbatore North covers the northern half of the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation. It includes Ganapathy (Sampathkumar's home and business base), Saibaba Colony, parts of R.S. Puram, Vadavalli, Saravanampatti, Thudiyalur, the Mettupalayam Road belt, Bharathi Park, Tatabad, the Nehru Stadium area and the Lakshmi Mills belt. The seat falls within the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency. It is unreserved (General), with SC and ST population shares of roughly 6.99% and 0.13% respectively.

The 2026 roll carried 2,96,994 electors — one of the larger urban ACs in Coimbatore by roll size. Turnout was approximately 75.3% (2,26,109 votes cast), slightly below the state average.

Why the seat flipped. Three factors converged. First, after fifteen years of unbroken AIADMK rule (Malaravan 2011, Arunkumar 2016, Arjunan 2021) the constituency carried significant incumbency fatigue — the AIADMK chose not to defend the seat with its sitting MLA, moving Arjunan to Coimbatore South. Second, the BJP's national leadership shifted Vanathi Srinivasan — National President of the BJP Mahila Morcha and the 2021 giant-killer who had defeated Kamal Haasan in Coimbatore South — into Coimbatore North as the marquee NDA candidate. The triangular contest split the anti-DMK vote in BJP's favour for the first stretch of counting, then collapsed in TVK's direction as Sampathkumar's ground network in Ganapathy, Thudiyalur and Saravanampatti held. Vanathi finished a distant third by 42,778 votes — nearly twice his margin over DMK. Third, the broader Kongu-belt TVK swing — the same wave that gave Vijay 108 of 234 seats statewide — carried Coimbatore North decisively.
