Dr. A. Sridharan is not a first-time politician. The 69-year-old physician–academic was the AIADMK MLA from Valparai in 1991, riding J. Jayalalithaa's first wave with a 60.71% vote share and a 21,184-vote victory over CPI's A. T. Karuppaiah. He then stepped away from electoral politics for more than three decades, building his medical career and completing a PhD at Tamil Nadu Government Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in 2015. When actor C. Joseph Vijay launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam on 2 February 2024, Sridharan was inducted into the party's small national leadership circle as Deputy General Secretary — a rank directly under General Secretary N. The 1991 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election was the one that brought J. Jayalalithaa to the chief minister's chair for the first time, on an AIADMK–Congress alliance ticket. In Valparai — then a swing seat that had alternated between DMK, AIADMK, CPI and Congress through the 1970s and 80s — a young Dr. A. Sridharan polled 55,284 votes (60.71%) against CPI's A. T. Karuppaiah, winning by 21,184 votes: one of the highest margins ever recorded in the constituency. He served one term and did not retain the seat; in 1996 the DMK's V. P. Singaravelu took Valparai. Sridharan then withdrew from electoral politics for thirty-five years, returning to his medical practice and to academic research.

When TVK was launched on 2 February 2024, the party drew heavily on disillusioned AIADMK veterans. Dr. Sridharan was not absorbed as a district-level worker but lifted directly into the party's national leadership as Deputy General Secretary — the same post held by figures like A. Rajmohan (propaganda) and CTR Nirmal Kumar (IT & social media). In Dravidian party hierarchies, Deputy General Secretary (துணைப் பொதுச் செயலாளர்) is a top-tier national rank, second only to the General Secretary and ranking above every state secretary, district secretary, and wing head. TVK's own candidate page carries one line under his portrait: "Deputy General Secretary of the Party, MBBS, DA, PhD, Ex-MLA."

For a Vijay-fronted party fighting its first assembly election, the calculus was clear. In an SC-reserved hill seat dominated by tea-plantation labour, fielding a Dalit doctor who was already the MLA of the very same constituency in 1991 was the strongest possible introduction — caste credentials, medical credentials, and political memory all aligned in one candidacy.

The 2026 vote in Valparai split cleanly three ways: DMK's incumbent-alliance machinery, the resurgent AIADMK plantation cadre, and the TVK newcomer all clustered inside a 10,000-vote window. DMK's A. Kutty Sudhakar won. Dr. Sridharan finished second by 9,371 votes. The buried headline: TVK pushed AIADMK into third place in a seat AIADMK held in both 2016 and 2021 — evidence that Sridharan's 1991 base came home.

Valparai — the constituency வால்பாறை — தொகுதி

Valparai (வால்பாறை) is not a typical constituency. It is a hill station at 3,500 ft on the Anaimalai (Elephant) Hills of the Western Ghats, in Coimbatore district. The economy is almost entirely tea and coffee plantations — large estates worked by generations of labour, much of it Sri Lankan-Tamil-origin and Dalit. The seat is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates; SCs are about 31.94% of the population, STs a further 2.94%, with indigenous Kadar, Muthuvar, Malai Malasar, Malasar and Eravallar communities living in the forest interiors. Valparai sits inside the Pollachi Lok Sabha seat.

The political issues that define Valparai — plantation wages, tribal land rights under the Forest Rights Act, human–elephant conflict along the estate roads, monsoon-season landslides, and the chronic shortage of higher-level medical infrastructure on the hill — map almost exactly onto Sridharan's pitch as a doctor-legislator.
