The buses began arriving at SNS College of Engineering on the Coimbatore-Sathy Road from about six in the morning. By eight, the parking lots were full and the overflow was being directed onto the adjacent fields. This was the Western Region Booth Conference of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam — held on Saturday, 26 April 2025, with a reported turnout of 8,000 cadres drawn from Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and the surrounding districts. It was the first major test of whether the party founded by actor Vijay on 2 February 2024 had a ground organisation to match its star power.
The person responsible for the answer was V. Sampathkumar, the Coimbatore organiser who would later become BC Welfare Minister. For fourteen months he had been doing the work that does not photograph well — booth-level cadre identification, ward-by-ward voter list scrubbing, panchayat-level coordinator appointments. The April conference was his project review, conducted in front of the man whose name was on the door.
Vijay arrived just before noon, in white shirt and white veshti, to a reception that the local press would later describe as resembling a film release more than a political event. But what followed was not a film event. Vijay's speech ran for roughly forty minutes, and its themes were the themes he would carry into the 2026 campaign: an anti-corruption stance directed at both Dravidian majors; a critique of communal politics aimed at the BJP; a social-justice frame built around the Periyarist tradition and Ambedkarite constitutionalism; and a pragmatic, almost technocratic, vision of governance grounded in Tamil pride.
What distinguished the Coimbatore launch from earlier TVK events in Madurai and Salem was the level of organisational specificity. Sampathkumar presented booth-level statistics — number of booths covered, number of polling agents identified, gaps remaining. District presidents from each of the eight western districts gave three-minute reports. Women's wing coordinators outlined ward-conference schedules. The IT cell announced a voter helpline. None of this was exciting; all of it was necessary.
The symbolic moment came in the afternoon, when Sampathkumar formally inducted the first wave of booth-level coordinators — over 4,500 names — into the party register on stage. Each received a TVK identification card and a copy of the party constitution. The image of that line, stretching from the stage out into the auditorium, became the photograph that ran in every Kongu daily the next morning.
For cadres who attended, the conference was the moment TVK became real. Many had joined in 2024 on the strength of Vijay's name; what they saw on 26 April 2025 was infrastructure — a party that had bothered to learn their names, count their booths, and ask them what they needed.
Thirteen months later, when Coimbatore North flipped to TVK and Sampathkumar walked into Raj Bhavan to take the oath as BC Welfare Minister, that infrastructure was what had carried the day. The cameras of 21 May 2026 captured the result. The cameras of 26 April 2025 had captured the work.

மதுரை, சேலத்தில் நடந்த முந்தைய தவெக நிகழ்வுகளிலிருந்து கோயம்புத்தூர் தொடக்கத்தை வேறுபடுத்தியது அமைப்பு ரீதியான குறிப்பிட்டத்தன்மை. சம்பத்குமார் வாக்குச்சாவடி அளவிலான புள்ளிவிவரங்களை வழங்கினார் — உள்ளடக்கப்பட்ட சாவடிகளின் எண்ணிக்கை, அடையாளம் காணப்பட்ட வாக்குச்சாவடி முகவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை, இன்னும் நிறைய வேண்டிய இடைவெளிகள். எட்டு மேற்கு மாவட்டங்களின் தலைவர்கள் மூன்று நிமிட அறிக்கைகளை வழங்கினர். மகளிர் அணி ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர்கள் வார்டு மாநாட்டு அட்டவணைகளை வரையறுத்தனர். ஐ.டி பிரிவு வாக்காளர் உதவி எண்ணை அறிவித்தது. இவை எதுவும் கிளர்ச்சியூட்டுபவையாக இல்லை; அனைத்தும் தேவையானவை.

கலந்துகொண்ட தொண்டர்களை பொறுத்தவரை, மாநாடு என்பது தவெக உண்மையானதாக மாறிய தருணம். பலர் 2024-ல் விஜயின் பெயரின் வலிமையில் சேர்ந்திருந்தனர்; 2025 ஏப்ரல் 26 அன்று அவர்கள் கண்டது உள்கட்டமைப்பை — அவர்களின் பெயர்களை கற்க, சாவடிகளை எண்ண, அவர்களுக்கு என்ன தேவை என்று கேட்க முயற்சித்த ஒரு கட்சியை.
பதின்மூன்று மாதங்களுக்குப் பின், கோயம்புத்தூர் வடக்கு தவெகவுக்கு மாறி சம்பத்குமார் பிற்படுத்தப்பட்டோர் நலத்துறை அமைச்சராக பதவியேற்க ராஜ் பவனுக்கு சென்றபோது, அந்த உள்கட்டமைப்பே நாளை சுமந்துசென்றது. 2026 மே 21-ன் காமிராக்கள் முடிவை பதிவு செய்தன. 2025 ஏப்ரல் 26-ன் காமிராக்கள் வேலையை பதிவு செய்திருந்தன.
