On the morning of 4 May 2026, when the Coimbatore district counting agents finished their tallies, the map of the district looked unlike any it had worn before. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) had taken six of the district's ten assembly constituencies. AIADMK held its remaining citadel in Thondamuthur. The DMK was reduced to a single seat. Coimbatore South — the urban swing seat both major fronts had circled in red — slipped to TVK by a margin so thin it required a recount. Each result is worth reading on its own terms.
The symbolic victory was Coimbatore North, where Minister-designate V. Sampath Kumar polled 92,500 votes for a 40.91% share, defeating the AIADMK incumbent by 21,992 votes. North is a constituency of mill workers, mid-sized traders, and the eastern textile cluster — communities that had drifted between AIADMK and DMK over three decades. The TVK margin here was less a swing than a settlement: voters who had been politically homeless found a home.
Thondamuthur is the most instructive non-victory. The seat stayed with S.P. Velumani, AIADMK's veteran and a former Municipal Administration Minister. Thondamuthur is a constituency of Kongu Vellalar Gounder concentration, where personal patronage networks built over decades cannot be dislodged by a single-cycle wave. The lesson is not that TVK was rejected; it is that incumbency built on real welfare delivery — Velumani's road and water projects are visible from any village panchayat office — is the hardest variable in Tamil politics to displace. TVK polled a respectable second.
Coimbatore South tells a different story. The constituency is the district's most urban, most English-medium, most professional-class seat. It also has a meaningful Muslim and Christian minority presence around Race Course and R.S. Puram. The TVK candidate won by under four thousand votes — a margin no strategist would call comfortable. The arithmetic was decided by first-time voters in the IT corridor and by the unusually high turnout in apartment-block polling stations. Coimbatore South is now a marginal seat, and TVK's responsibility is to make it safe by 2031.
The four other TVK gains — Singanallur, Kavundampalayam, Sulur and Mettupalayam — share a common structure: they were urban or peri-urban seats with a sizable young voter cohort and grievances about industrial pollution, water stress, and the cost of higher education. TVK's campaign in these constituencies focused tightly on three planks rather than the usual five or six. Concentration of message matched concentration of cadre. Madukkarai, Pollachi and Valparai went otherwise, but with reduced margins that suggest a 2031 conversation, not a 2026 verdict.
The headline number — six of ten — is honest but incomplete. The deeper number is that TVK is now the median party in every single Coimbatore constituency, winning or competitive. No district party machine in Tamil Nadu has had to absorb that kind of responsibility this fast since 1967.

அடையாள வெற்றி கோவை வடக்கு. அமைச்சர்-நியமனம் பெற்ற வே. சம்பத் குமார் இங்கே 92,500 வாக்குகள் பெற்று 40.91% வாக்கு விகிதத்தில், அதிமுக வேட்பாளரை 21,992 வாக்குகள் வித்தியாசத்தில் வீழ்த்தினார். வடக்கு என்பது மில் தொழிலாளர்கள், நடுத்தர வர்த்தகர்கள், கிழக்கு ஆடைத் தொழில் கொத்துப் பகுதிகள் கொண்ட தொகுதி — மூன்று தசாப்தங்களாக அதிமுக-திமுக இடையே ஊசலாடிய சமூகங்கள். இங்கே தவெகவின் வெற்றி ஒரு ஊசலாட்டம் அல்ல; ஒரு குடியேற்றம். அரசியல் ரீதியாக வீடற்றிருந்த வாக்காளர்கள் ஒரு வீட்டைக் கண்டடைந்தனர்.
தோல்விகளில் மிக முக்கியமான பாடம் தொண்டாமுத்தூர். தொகுதி எஸ்.பி. வேலுமணியிடம், அதிமுகவின் மூத்த தலைவர், முன்னாள் நகராட்சி நிர்வாக அமைச்சர், கைகளிலேயே இருந்தது. தொண்டாமுத்தூர் என்பது கொங்கு வேளாள கவுண்டர் செறிவு கொண்ட தொகுதி. தசாப்தங்களாகக் கட்டப்பட்ட தனிநபர் ஆதரவு வலையமைப்புகள் ஒரே சுழற்சி அலையால் இடம்பெயர்க்கப்படுவதில்லை. தவெக நிராகரிக்கப்பட்டது என்ற பாடம் இது அல்ல; உண்மையான நலத் திட்ட நிறைவேற்றம் மீது கட்டப்பட்ட பதவியாட்சி — வேலுமணியின் சாலை, குடிநீர்த் திட்டங்கள் எந்த கிராம ஊராட்சி அலுவலகத்திலிருந்தும் தெரியும் — தமிழ் அரசியலில் இடம்பெயர்த்துவதற்கு மிகக் கடினமான மாறி. தவெக இங்கே மரியாதையான இரண்டாம் இடம் பெற்றது.
கோவை தெற்கு வேறு கதை சொல்கிறது. மாவட்டத்தின் மிக நகர்ப்புற, மிக ஆங்கில மொழி, மிக தொழில்முறை வர்க்க தொகுதி. ரேஸ் கோர்ஸ், ஆர்.எஸ். புரம் பகுதிகளில் முக்கியமான முஸ்லிம், கிறிஸ்தவ சிறுபான்மை குடியிருப்புகளும் உள்ளன. தவெக வேட்பாளர் இங்கே நான்காயிரம் வாக்குகளுக்குக் குறைவான வித்தியாசத்தில் வென்றார் — எந்த ஆலோசகரும் வசதியானது என்று அழைக்க மாட்டார். கணக்கீட்டை தீர்மானித்தவர்கள் ஐ.டி காரிடாரில் முதல் முறை வாக்களித்த இளைஞர்களும், அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்புகளில் வழக்கத்திற்கு மாறான அதிக வாக்களிப்பும். கோவை தெற்கு இப்போது ஒரு குறுகிய தொகுதி. 2031-க்குள் அதை பாதுகாப்பான தொகுதியாக மாற்றுவது தவெகவின் பொறுப்பு.
மற்ற நான்கு தவெக வெற்றிகள் — சிங்காநல்லூர், கவுண்டம்பாளையம், சூலூர், மேட்டுப்பாளையம் — பொதுவான கட்டமைப்பு கொண்டவை: நகர்ப்புற அல்லது அரை-நகர்ப்புற தொகுதிகள், கணிசமான இளம் வாக்காளர் கூட்டம், தொழில் மாசு, தண்ணீர் தட்டுப்பாடு, உயர்கல்விச் செலவு குறித்த குறைகள். இந்தத் தொகுதிகளில் தவெகவின் பிரச்சாரம் வழக்கமான ஐந்து-ஆறு கருத்துகளுக்குப் பதிலாக மூன்று கருத்துகளில் இறுக்கமாகக் கவனம் செலுத்தியது. செய்தியின் செறிவு தொண்டர் செறிவுக்கு ஒத்து வந்தது. மதுக்கரை, பொள்ளாச்சி, வால்பாறை வேறு திசையில் சென்றன, ஆனால் குறைந்த வித்தியாசங்களுடன் — 2026 தீர்ப்பு அல்ல, 2031-க்கான உரையாடல் என்பதைக் காட்டுகிறது.
